What is Telegram?
Telegram is a free messaging app with over 950 million users, founded by Pavel Durov and headquartered in Dubai, UAE. DavidMap uses a Telegram bot to send you pin alerts.
Using DavidMap without notifications
The map collects no personal data. No account, no login, no IP address logging. Sessions use a randomly generated ID that is hashed (irreversibly scrambled) before reaching our server. Pins auto-delete after 30 minutes.
Using DavidMap with notifications
Our server stores only your Telegram chat ID and your chosen alert area coordinates. No name, no phone number, no IP address. The trade-off is that Telegram links chat IDs to phone numbers. Following the arrest of CEO Pavel Durov in France in August 2024, Telegram updated its policy and now shares IP addresses and phone numbers with authorities in response to valid legal requests — a change from its previously stricter position.
Compared to WhatsApp
WhatsApp is owned by Meta and is significantly more cooperative with governments and advertisers. Telegram does not use your data for advertising and its data sharing remains more limited by comparison.
